Schaeffler strengthens cooperation in valve control system

The Schaeffler Group recently signed a cooperation agreement with ABB Turbo Equipment Co., Ltd. It is reported that Schaeffler Group's world-renowned rolling bearing manufacturer has three brands: INA, LUK and FAG. The group has approximately 66,000 employees and had sales of approximately 8.9 billion euros in 2008. Innovation is the source of this sustainable development. The group will apply for 1,250 patents each year.

The main content of this cooperation is applied to products with a single-cylinder power above 400 kW. The Schaeffler Group will provide its newly developed UniAir-type fully variable valve control system. Schaeffler related responsible person said that the system is ready for mass production.

It is understood that the fully variable valve control system (VVT) is very suitable for modern high-pressure, two-stage turbocharging systems. ABB Turbosystems Sales and Marketing Director Oliver Snyder also stated that the advantages of the VVT system and the high-pressure turbocharger are mainly to reduce emissions and fuel consumption, and improve performance in terms of start-up, partial load, and acceleration. UniAir's fully variable, hydraulic valve control system supports the VVT system, allowing both valve timing and valve lift to be simultaneously variable.

"The Schaeffler variable valve control system reduces fuel consumption while reducing CO2 emissions by up to 25%. In addition, UniAir improves engine performance by increasing power, torque and optimizing engine response." Schaeffler Group Automotive Dr. Peter Pruss, president and chief of the engine system, explained: "The cooperation with ABB turbocharger system has opened up new applications for innovative valve control systems."
