Qualcomm acquires Halo IPTV for electric vehicle charging company

Qualcomm announced on Tuesday that it has acquired most of Halo's IPTV assets, a company that specializes in wireless charging technology for electric road vehicles. The specific financial details have not been announced yet.

Qualcomm said that all employees of the HaloIPT team will join Qualcomm’s European Innovation and Development Department in the UK.

In the statement, Andrew Gilbert, Qualcomm’s executive vice president of innovation and development, stated that “HaloIPT has established its foundation in the short term based on the wireless charging development and innovation at the University of Auckland and the commercialization of Auckland UniServices. The leading position in the development of wireless electric road vehicle charging technology has won recognition and awards from the industry.”

Last month, HaloIPT announced the acquisition of two New Zealand Innovation Awards: the Innovation Star Award and the Design and Engineering Innovation Award.

According to the HaloIPT website, the company's wireless charging technology is based on inductive power transfer (IPT) technology. In this technique, the power of the power source comes from the main power source, and at the same time, the coil is excited to generate a current of typically 5-125 A. The coil is an induction coil, which means that in terms of the power supply circuit, it is possible to compensate by serial and parallel capacitors to reduce the operating voltage and current.

HaloIPT executive chairman JohnMiles said that in the past 18 months, the company introduced wireless charging technology developed by the university to the global automotive industry and attracted attention, demonstrating the technology's potential for global OEMs. He said, "This is a great achievement."

Qualcomm stated that in addition to the acquisition of HaloIPT, Qualcomm and Auckland UniServices, a commercial company under the University of Auckland, signed a long-term research and cooperation agreement to promote the further development of wireless electric vehicle charging using inductive power transmission.
