·London imposes ultra-low emission zones on diesel vehicles

Johnson is preparing to set up an ultra-low emission zone in central London in 2020, allowing only hybrid and electric vehicles to enter, encouraging vehicles to start low or zero emissions.

London Mayor Boris Johnson is planning to increase taxes on diesel vehicles to bring the amount of nitrogen dioxide in the air to the EU's limit.

On the 29th, local time, the Mayor's Office of London issued a statement saying that Johnson is preparing to set up an ultra-low emission zone in central London in 2020, allowing only hybrid and electric vehicles to enter, encouraging vehicles to start low or zero emissions. He will also give a speech on air quality issues to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Clean Air Act (the Clean Air Act).

The smog over London in April, the outside world also predicted that the air pollution in London is difficult to reach the EU's 2010 limit, at least until 2030. This allowed Johnson to double the pressure on controlling the emission of harmful nitrogen dioxide from diesel combustion.

Johnson said: "The priority is to improve the air quality in London. It has already affected the health and living standards of Londoners. It can no longer be delayed. This is a huge turning point, but as long as London puts more effort, it will be in 2020. The EU has reached the standard for limiting nitrogen dioxide before the year."

London and other European cities are struggling to reduce their nitrogen dioxide emissions due to rising diesel use. Diesel vehicles emit less greenhouse gases per mile than gasoline vehicles, but they emit more nitrogen dioxide than the latter. According to the World Health Organization, nitrogen dioxide stimulates the respiratory tract and induces bronchitis.

According to Johnson's plan, the emissions of diesel vehicles either meet certain EU standards or are subject to additional charges, which are similar to the traffic congestion charges. Currently, London's congestion charge to ease traffic pressure is £11.5 a day ($19.5).

Johnson's goal is to reach 200,000 ultra-low-emission vehicles on London Street. At the same time, 7,000 taxis and 1,600 buses can achieve zero emissions. He also plans to set up 35 fast charging centers and 350 charging outlets for electric vehicles.
